9 Cheshire Wetherspoon pubs where the toilets are anything but bog standard
The boozers have all been recognised... for their loos!
Nine Wetherspoon pubs in Cheshire have been recognised - for the quality and standards of their toilets. The boozers - including two in Chester - were all prize winners in the Loo of the Year Awards 2025.
The awards are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of 'away from home' toilet provision across the UK. Loo of the Year Awards inspectors made unannounced visits to thousands of toilets at sites across the UK, in order to judge them.
All of the toilets are graded bronze, silver, gold, platinum, platinum plus or diamond with unacceptable toilets not graded at all. The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.
Here are the Cheshire pubs recognised at the awards:
Chester
Two city centre pubs have been recognised. The Bull and Stirrup Hotel in Upper Northgate Street has been awarded a platinum plus grading by inspectors and The Square Bottle in Foregate Street has been awarded a platinum grading.
The Bull and Stirrup Hotel manager, Victoria Underhill, said: "We are delighted with the grading. Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in excellent conditon at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors."
The Loo of the Year Awards 2025 managing director, Becky Wall, said: "The toilets at the two pubs have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained. The pubs deserve their gradings."
Ellesmere Port
An Ellesmere Port pub won acclaim for the quality and standards of its toilets. The Wheatsheaf on Overpool Road has been awarded a platinum grading by inspectors.
The Wheatsheaf is managed by Tiffany Simmonds. She said: “We are delighted with the grading."
Congleton
Congleton pub The Counting House, in Swan Bank, has been awarded a platinum grading by inspectors. The boozer is managed by Alex Nuttall.
Northwich
The Penny Black, a Wetherspoon pub in Witton Street, was recognised in the awards. The boozer has been awarded a platinum grading by inspectors.
The Penny Black is managed by Garry Deakin.
Macclesfield and Poynton
The Society Rooms in Park Green, Macclesfield, has been awarded a gold grading. Meanwhile, The Kingfisher in nearby Poynton has also been recognised.
The London Road South boozer has been awarded a diamond grading by inspectors – the highest award possible. Becky Wall, said: “The pubs deserve their gradings.”
Sandbach
The George Inn, a Wetherspoon pub in High Street, has been awarded a platinum plus grading by inspectors. The George Inn is managed by Kate Shaw.
Widnes
The Premier, a Wetherspoon pub in Albert Road, has been awarded a platinum grading by inspectors. The Premier is managed by Joshua Bottomley.
He said: “We are delighted with the grading."
