Cheshire's Christmas 2024 and New Year bin collection dates

Christmas is nearly here – and with all those presents, meals, and drinks, your bins can quickly get filled to the brim with that leftover festive magic. But as we all take time off for the holidays, our usual bin collection days can be rescheduled.

Each council across Cheshire has now finalised its seasonal bin collection days, so we’ve put together this handy guide so you get all the important dates in your diary. Also included is useful information about recycling centre opening hours and Christmas tree drop-off points.

Here are all the key details regarding your waste and recycling in Cheshire this holiday season:

Cheshire West and Cheshire

The council has advised that bin collection dates over the festive period will remain largely unchanged, unless your normal collection falls on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year’s Day.

Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year. That means if your normal collection day is Wednesday, your bins will be collected a bit earlier than usual. The revised collection date is Saturday, December 21.

New Year’s Day also lands on a Wednesday. Your scheduled collection will be pushed back by three days to Saturday, January 4.

If you have your bins collected on a Thursday, that means they’ll fall on Boxing Day this year. As a result, your collection will be pushed back by two days, falling instead on Saturday, December 28.

Lots of us have extra recycling around this time of year – thankfully, the council have said that you can leave excess recycling securely alongside your bin for collection. However, foil wrapping paper and cards or paper with glitter on them cannot be recycled.

Real Christmas trees can be dropped at any of the following locations throughout January 2025 for recycling:

• Hooton Golf Club, Chester Road, Hooton, Ellesmere Port, CH66 1QF
• Whitby Park, Stanney Lane Ellesmere Port, CH65 9AQ
• Stanney Fields Park, Hinderton Road, Neston, CH64 9PE
• Westminster Park, Hough Green, Chester, CH4 8JW
• Marbury Park, Marbury Lane, CW9 6AP
• Castle Park, Fountain Lane, Frodsham, WA6 6SA
• Knights Grange Sports Complex, Winsford, CW7 2PT

On-site signs will advise where to leave the trees, which will be chipped and mulched to use for shrub-beds throughout the the borough. It’s important the trees are delivered without lights or decorations on them.

You can also leave your tree at any Household Waste Recycling Centre. Additionally, you can help to raise money for a good cause by recycling your tree via Just Helping. The money raised from your tree’s recycling will be used towards supporting local hospices. You can find out more information about the options here .

Cheshire East

Cheshire East has announced a number of changes to collection dates for those whose normal black and silver bin collections fall on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Only those who have their bins picked up on a Wednesday or Thursday will be affected.

If your collection falls on Christmas Day, your black bins will instead be picked up on Monday December 23. Your silver bins will get collected on Tuesday, December 24.

If your collection lands on Boxing Day, your black bins will be rescheduled for Monday, December 30. Your silver bins will be collected on Tuesday, December 31.

If your bin pick-ups are due on New Year’s Day, your black bins will instead be grabbed on Thursday, January 2. Your silver bins will be emptied on Monday, January 6.

Halton

Collection information for Halton residents is handed out based on your location. You can find out more about your festive collection schedule by checking your address on the council’s website.

Warrington

To find out more about your collection dates, you’ll need to enter your address into the council’s website. Gatewarth, Stockton Heath, and Woolston recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.
