The Chester Grosvenor - and Cheshire as a whole - is no longer home to a Michelin star restaurant for the first time in more than 30 years.

As a result of its main fine dining restaurant being closed for several months ahead of an eagerly-anticipated relaunch, the five-star hotel has not made this year's prestigious Michelin Guide.

The restaurant, formerly known as Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor, has continuously retained its Michelin star since 1990, making it one of the UK's longest standing holders of the accolade.

However, the restaurant closed during the summer for a revamp with former executive chef, Simon Radley, departing in October last year following more than 30 years working at the city centre hotel.

Unfortunately, the closure put the popular venue out of the running for the 2022 Guide and it now leaves Le Gavroche in London as the longest standing consecutive holder of a one Michelin star accolade.

A spokesman for Michelin confirmed to CheshireLive: "Quite simply, the Guide can’t recommend a restaurant that isn’t open for business at the time of publishing.

"When it reopens it will, of course, be reassessed."

Cestrian chef Elliot Hill, formerly head chef at one of the UK's highest restaurants - Liverpool’s Panoramic 34, will oversee the city centre hotel's freshly rebranded, refined dining restaurant as its new executive chef.

The Arkle is due to open next month.

With the Michelin Guide announcements being made only once a year, The Chester Grosvenor wouldn't be able to reclaim its Michelin star until 2023 at the earliest.

The quality of the food would need to be assessed on more than one occasion before potentially earning the accolade.

A spokeswoman for The Chester Grosvenor said: “We look forward to the Michelin inspectors experiencing Arkle once the restaurant is open."

Speaking at the turn of the year after being announced as the new executive chef, Chester -born Elliot said: "I am proud and honoured to join The Chester Grosvenor and head up the kitchen in my home city.

"Not only is the hotel a Chester icon, but a culinary institution that has led the way for decades.

Alongside the Arkle, Elliot will also oversee the hotel’s 2 AA Rosette restaurant La Brasserie, as well as the afternoon tea and banqueting functions.
