Essar has warned residents that 'flaring' is expected to take place at the Stanlow refinery over the weekend. A statement was issued by the firm this afternoon.

It said: "We would like to make you aware of some flaring which is expected to take place over the weekend. This is because we are in the process of restarting one of our units.

"The flaring occurs as part of the process to bring units back on-line. Flaring is the controlled burning of refinery gases (at the flare structure) from plant safety and vent systems.

"The gases are mixed with steam and the steam is added to improve combustion and reduce smoke generation. Flaring can also be noisy, and we will endeavour to minimise it at all times.

"Please be assured that this activity is undertaken in a safe and controlled way. We would like to thank you for your patience during this period."
