Essar Oil UK has apologised to nearby residents over the smell emanating from its Stanlow site following an incident last month.

The company says the issue is currently being resolved but warned the public that "odours may last for another 10 days". The smell relates to an incident at the Ellesmere Port refinery on July 24.

In a statement issued yesterday, Essar Oil UK said: "We’d like to update you on the progress of managing an incident which was identified on Monday (24 July). We apologise again for any odours from our site that you may have experienced over the last week.

"Please be assured that the incident is being managed in accordance with normal site safety protocol and is being resolved in a safe and controlled way.

"Again, we plan for a speedy resolution to this issue and hope that this is not causing you any inconvenience, however the odours may last for another 10 days.

"We will keep you informed if there are any updates on the current situation."
