Historic Cheshire pub reopens today after major transformation
"We truly have something for everyone"
A much-loved Cheshire pub dating back to the late 18th century reopens today (Friday) following a major transformation. The Merlin in Alderley Edge, is a country pub and restaurant that has gained a reputation for its cosiness and top-level service.
Situated in a building originally built as a private boarding school where Victorian author George Gissing once studied, the venue has been given a new look inside and out offering a 'country charm with contemporary sophistication'. The transformation includes refurbished spaces, additional outdoor seating, new fabrics, and a new aesthetic in the form of comforting rich burnt orange and purple tones.
The revamp will also see the addition of new intimate 'mini rooms' including cosy alcoves separated by display cabinets, reports the MEN. Three open fireplaces will also keep things comfortable around the bar - which is situated within the original building - and the restaurant, which boasts high ceilings.
The Merlin also features a stunning Glass Cube - a versatile private dining space which can seat up to 40 guests. The pub also has a wedding licence for two rooms, as well as being perfectly suited for proms, celebrations and corporate functions. The pub will continue to retain its place in the local community as an events hub and meeting spot for local groups, including yoga sessions, 'Happy Mums Happy Babies' groups, cocktail evenings, and canvas painting nights. There is also free on-site car parking.
"What makes The Merlin so special is the incredible variety of experiences we can offer," general manager Martyn Davis said of the transformation. "From the premium hotel rooms upstairs to our multiple function spaces, from community events to fine dining, we truly have something for everyone.
"Being part of this community and working alongside such a friendly, dedicated team has been wonderful. As a result, we're a destination where locals and visitors alike can celebrate life's important moments in style and comfort."
Head Chef Greg Leczycki, who has now been with The Merlin for two years, has created a restaurant menu focusing on passion, expertise and a commitment to quality. There will also be freshly-carved roasts served every Sunday, as well as an extensive drinks menu spanning across wines, artisan spirits, premium draughts and signature cocktails.
The welcoming pub is also situated just five minutes from The Edge, which offers unrivalled panoramic views across the Cheshire Plain towards Manchester and the Peak District. The highest point of The Edge was originally used as a burial mound in the Bronze Age, and later used to light a fire beacon warning of invading troops.
The Merlin, which is part of the Premium Country Pub Collection, also offers 12 comfortable en-suite hotel rooms through its Innkeeper's Lodge, and has big plans for Christmas with a festive menu and a Christmas Market featuring stalls from local traders.
Martyn adds: "With the festive season just weeks away, we're thrilled to announce our calendar of exciting events. Our Festive Menu will be available right up to Christmas Eve, while our Christmas Day menu promises to make celebrating the season truly memorable.
"On 14th December, we're hosting a special Christmas Market that will bring our community together in the spirit of the season. Christmas Eve will see us welcoming locals for festive celebrations, creating that warm, community atmosphere that makes The Merlin so special. We can't wait to share these magical moments with our guests."
