How Macclesfield man shed quarter of body weight in just seven months

Gareth Roberts said 'this has to change' after seeing a picture of himself

Gareth Roberts has lost a quarter of his body weight to tip the scales at under 15st

A man so determined to shed the pounds that he started slimming the week before Christmas has now lost a quarter of his body weight.

Gareth Roberts, 56, from Gawsworth, joined the Slimming World Group at Macclesfield Community Centre in December 2023.

At that point he weighed 19st 7lb and had decided to take action after seeing a picture of himself taken at a works Christmas party.

And just seven months later he has lost 4st 9.5lb to weight just under 15st as well as being named the group’s Man of the Year.

Gareth said: “It (the photo) had the effect of me coming home to my wife and saying, ‘that’s it, enough is enough, this has to change’.

“I am of an age where if I don’t get myself set for being here as long as I can to see future grandchildren grow up, then it’s only going to get harder.”

Gareth has also changed his diet - eating better rather than eating less - as well as rediscovering exercise and his love of cycling.

Julie Bowden, consultant at Gareth’s group, said: “Gareth fully embraced the changes in his mindset, cooking, shopping and when faced with dining out for a work event he asked advice and took it with both hands.

“It’s an absolute delight to award any member with all the awards we give out and Gareth is no exception.

“I’m very proud of all the changes he made. I can’t believe the difference in the two images side by side.”

Julie runs groups at Macclesfield Community Centre, Duke Street, on Fridays and at Calvary Church, Merebrook Road, on Mondays.
