'In Cheshire village home to footballers and supercars I found one of the best fry-ups'

This brunch spot is quietly serving up one of the best cooked breakfasts around

A warning, some of you will disagree with me about this fry-up. But before we get onto what constitutes a proper cooked breakfast, here's a bit of context.

At the Southwest point of Cheshire's Golden Triangle sits Alderley Edge - or "Knightsbridge of the North' as it's sometimes called. Known for being home to Premier League footballers, plush houses and boutiques, it's one of the county's most desirable places to live.

Through its main thoroughfare, well-heeled residents meander their way between supercars, shops and well-established restaurants and bars, while just beyond visitors come to explore The Edge - the village's dramatic sandstone escarpment with its sweeping views and ancient woodland. Others come for their supercar fix and camp out with the cameras ready to spot a Bugatti or Lamborghini as they drive in.

Then there's the rest of us that come along every once in a while to have a little nosy and something to eat to justify the trip out, reports the MEN. Although the village's main London Road has plenty of places to grab a bite and do some celeb spotting - from the glitzy high-end Italian San Carlo and wisteria-clad Victors with its sushi and bottomless brunch, to the smoothie bowl haven of Nar cafe and bar, and Bubble Room, which has been a mainstay of the high street for over 20 years - I decided on this visit to head back a couple of streets.

Tucked away on South Street, is Modern Farmhouse. Described as Alderley Edge's 'first' neighbourhood restaurant, and featuring a lifestyle store bolted on, it opened two years ago now and has become a go-to for a whole host of diners. It's situated next door to a Pilates studio, so you can expect the fitness types in their Lululemon leggings sauntering in, slurping a health juice, and making the rest of us feel guilty for failing to recall the last time we stepped inside a gym.

There's there's the digital nomads tapping away at their laptops and sipping a flat white, and sitting side-by-side with young families and their dogs, trying to enjoy their breakfasts whilst toddlers jostle their way out of high-chairs. It's trendy. You can tell from the moment you step over the threshold and are hit with its modern, Scandinavian-esque interiors with calming beige and white tones, chunky wooden fixtures and soft lighting.

Their 'modern brunch' philosophy is held up by three central pillars - food that is 'feel-good, uncomplicated and delicious', and there's lots of global influences at play with shakshuka on the lineup up along with the likes of salmon on rye or bagel with whipped feta and capers nodding to a Nordic influence.

Classics of modern brunch are accounted for so you'll see plenty of smashed avocado, buttered sourdough and French toast, but there's a clear health element in the mix too with green eggs mixed with chard leaves, kales and shallots as well as homemade granola and Greek yoghurt, and if you opt for lunch a garden bowl and bone broth - the latter a staple of health influencer culture.

The buttered sourdough with petal-like slithers of River Wye smoked salmon and golden-hued scrambled egg was certainly appealing, but on a specials menu tucked out of view I spotted something I've been craving - a proper cooked breakfast. I know the lure of Modern Farmhouse is its brunches, but a fry-up is a true test of an establishment - a chance to showcase their ingredients, their timing and value for money.

Hearty and comforting, a classic fry-up features fried bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. Depending on the cafe or brunch spot you might also expect to see black pudding, baked beans and hash brows on the bill - and maybe even a proper builder's brew.

It's an indulgent way to start your weekend and for me once I'd spotted the Modern Farmhouse option I was sold. Now, it's not cheap, lets be upfront about that but lets remember I was passing through the land of footballers, supercars and celebs, so £15.50 seemed about right. Across the board though, the price of ingredients is rising as are the costs of running a cafe or restaurant - from minimum wage and National Insurance contributions (NICs) to rent and energy bills - and that's regardless of your location.

What became quickly apparent when the plate of food arrived is that they've really considered their produce. For the £15.50 price tag there was a sausage, bacon rasher, piece of sourdough with a poached egg, tomato, black pudding, mushroom, beans in a rich and spicy tomato sauce, and a sturdy looking hash brown block.

It's perhaps not what all fry-ups look like and some might want a couple of sausages and bacon rashers, but for me it was just enough for me. A major highlight was the sausage, packed with herbs and easy to cut through it really was a credit to Modern Farmhouse. Equally the bacon was nicely cooked, as was the poached egg - and the smattering of chopped chives was a nice touch of elevation for the classic breakfast option. The beans, not your classic baked beans, were delightful, adding a smokiness and different flavour to the plate.

I was less enamoured with the black pudding, but it didn't particularly dull things, while I wish I had been bolder and asked for a different type of bread. I just don't care for sourdough - I understand it's trendy but its just so hard to eat and I almost sent my knife flying towards another diner attempting to hack at it - what's the point? Get me white bread and butter any day.

The star of the show was the mammoth hash brown though. Golden crispy bits of potato shooting off this potato block, soft filling and beautiful seasoning, I'd go back just to order have this again. My friend meanwhile customised her plate to have a bit of everything - salmon, scrambled eggs, avocado, a has brown, and a slice of sourdough - but I think as far as breakfast goes, surely a fry-up is the ultimate test of a cafe or restaurant - and this one delivered in droves.
