"It's not me!" - Simon Gregson confirms he's not this year's shock Coronation Street death

The Cheshire actor dispelled the rumour on Good Morning Britain

Simon Gregson says Steve is not the shock Corrie death in 2022

Legendary Coronation Street actor and hilarious prankster, Simon Gregson has confirmed that his character is not set to be killed off this year.

The 47-year-old, who has played Cobbles' funny-man Steve McDonald since 1989, joined Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon today (4 December) to discuss where the soap is currently up to following his recent I'm A Celebrity stint.

"I think in October, we were doing Christmas," he explained. "So, we do six episodes a week and we have at least four units out doing those six episodes in a week.

"That's 24 eps in front, so I don't know!"

He joked: "I think we're in about 2029 at the moment!"

Now, with Wetherfield gearing up for a new year filled with drama, destruction, deceit and reportedly, a shock death, Corrie fans have speculated which characters will become entangled with the upcoming chaos.

"Simon, the executive producer of Corrie has revealed there's going to be a shock death on the Cobbles this year," Bacon pondered. "Is it you?

"If it's not you, who is it?"

Gregson laughed: "It's not me! I don't know who it is, but now you've got me worried because I've been out of the game so long, I don't know whether I've signed my new contract yet!"

Last night's instalment saw Gregson's on-screen daughter Emma Brooker and accidentally running over a road-crossing pedestrian whilst trying to teach pal Fay Windass how to drive.

The event has caused quite a stir, leaving viewers wondering, who could be next?

"You never know when you're time is up, you know?" Gregson added. "You could be here for life - look at the amazing Bill Roache, of course - but also you couldn't!

"You can't relax as such, because one year they might say, 'Look, we've decided that you're out', and that's it, so they like to keep us in total fear.

"There's always an underbelly of nerves throughout the whole cast, wondering how long they've got, but just like everything, it's just probably easier not to think about it!"
