North West Motorway Police, which covers the Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside regions, clocked a Mercedes S350 travelling at 145mph on the M6 southbound in the early hours of this morning - with a learner driver at the wheel.

Eventually stopping the speeding vehicle, which was travelling at more than twice the legal limit for the road, officers then found the driver of the performance vehicle only held a provisional licence.

As a result, the vehicle was seized and the driver reported.

Officers tweeted: "MS16 paced this Mercedes S350 at 145mph on the M6 southbound.

"Driver was found to be a provisional licence holder only.

"Vehicle seized and the driver reported for summons."

A provisional licence allows the holder to drive on all UK roads except motorways before the driver passes their driving test.

However, drivers must be supervised by their driving instructor or any other driver over the age of 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years.
