Railway lines have reopened after a person was hit by a train in Cheshire on Thursday evening. The incident at Congleton was first reported by National Rail Enquiries at 9.14pm.


Rail services between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent were suspended but have now resumed. No details about the condition of the person involved have been released at this stage.


British Rail tweeted at 10.54pm on Thursday that although lines had been reopened, delays or cancellations were still likely as emergency services continued dealing with the incident. It said: " #Congleton - Lines have reopened following a person being hit by a train between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent earlier this evening. Emergency services are still attending to the incident, resulting in trains between these stations being cancelled or delayed."

At midnight, the National Rail Enquiries website reported: "Trains between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent are now running normally following a person hit by a train earlier this evening."

Routes and services affected by the incident included the Avanti West Coast between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston, CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street / Reading / Bournemouth and Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-on-Trent.
