Why there's been an unpleasant smell in Ellesmere Port in recent weeks

MP Justin Madders has got to the bottom of what is causing the unpleasant odours in Ellesmere Port during recent weeks. Mr Madders, who represents Ellesmere Port and Bromborough, has been in regular contact with the Environment Agency (EA) after receiving complaints from residents.
The EA has now confirmed it believes the potential source of the odour has been identified at a nearby industrial site. However, the company involved has not been named for legal reasons.
The odour is understood to be linked to a specific industrial process. Odour abatement measures are already being developed and are expected to be implemented within the next couple of weeks.
Mr Madders said: “The Environment Agency has informed me that its officers have today identified a potential source of the odour that has caused concern in Ellesmere Port over the past three weeks. For legal reasons, the agency is not prepared to name the industrial site at this stage, but the odour is believed to be linked to a specific process.”

He added: “The company involved is already working on a solution, having evaluated a range of odour abatement measures. Commissioning of this work is expected to be completed within the next two weeks and will form part of a new Odour Management Plan.”
Mr Madders has been informed that while the Environment Agency is not responsible for issuing public health advice, it remains in ongoing discussions with the Local Authority and the UK Health Security Agency. Writing on Facebook, he concluded: “I continue to receive entirely understandable messages from residents expressing their unease, and I have pressed for answers on your behalf throughout.”
