Co-owner of Tranmere Rovers and former FA chief executive Mark Palios has been appointed to the board of Essar Oil. The firm are sponsors of the Wirral club and owners of the Stanlow Refinery, Ellesmere Port, since 2011.

The former Rovers and Crewe Alexandra player has owned the League 2 club since 2014 along with his wife Nicola Palios. Mr Palios took up the role as an "independent non-executive board director" on Saturday, October 1.

The oil company, part of the Indian-based Essar group, has sponsored Tranmere for the past four seasons. Palios pursued a career as an accountant alongside his professional football career, later specialising in business turnaround.

Palios is widely credited with turning around the Football Association's perilous financial situation during the construction of Wembley Stadium in his short stint as FA chief executive between 2003 and 2004. Essar, which has owned the Stanlow refinery since 2011, says Palios will support the business in 'corporate governance and community relations,' as well as what it calls a 'long-term decarbonisation and energy transition plans.'

Mr Palios said: “I am delighted to join Essar’s Board. This is an exciting time in the company’s continued growth plans, as it delivers on its commitment for transforming for tomorrow by becoming a leader in the energy transition.

“I’ve seen first-hand the importance Essar gives to the local community, not just in its sponsorship of Tranmere Rovers, but across its operations. Not least, Essar continues to expand its apprenticeship programme and to welcome new graduate cohorts, both schemes that directly support the term career aspirations of our younger generation."
