We tried the cosy café that's perfect for after Delamere Forest Gruffalo trail

The Delamere Station House cafe is just a stone's throw from the Gruffalo trail in Cheshire's Delamere Forest and is perfect for a pit stop after a walk in the woods

This snug café at the train station is just what you need after a forest walk with the Gruffalo. A stroll in the woods is always refreshing, especially when spring flowers begin to bloom.

But there's something even more thrilling for your little ones in this Cheshire forest. Delamere Forest houses the Gruffalo trail, featuring sculptures of the purple prickled creature and other characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's beloved children's book.

We stumbled upon the trail during a recent visit to the forest, where we stayed in one of Hoseasons' forest lodges and swung through the trees at Go Ape.

The Forestry England trail has been around for several years now, attracting visitors eager to snap photos with the owl and the snake, reports the Manchester Evening News. There's a picnic area near the Gruffalo, perfect for warm weather, but not so much in February.

Knowing we'd be hungry after our journey through the deep dark wood, we parked at Delamere Station House cafe. This meant we avoided parking fees and could pop in for lunch before heading home.

The train station nearby is still operational, making it a great spot for drivers, train travellers and cyclists alike. It even has a special area for dogs at the back, which is where we decided to go.

I'd heard rave reviews about their all-day breakfasts. For £9.40, you get a generous plate filled with bacon, sausage, black pudding, a fried egg, beans, mushrooms and a tomato. You also have the option of fried bread, bread and butter, or toast.

Despite the bacon being a bit too salty, the meal was scrumptious and worth every penny. The kids enjoyed their sausage and bacon toasted muffins as well.

There's a wide variety of other options available, from the all-day breakfast menu featuring muffins and hash brown stacks, to the main menu with 'winter warmers' like lasagne and hot pot, as well as burgers, sandwiches, toasties, paninis, baked potatoes and more.

The kids loved the banana-flavoured milk from Delamere Dairy, and choosing a cake from the vast selection on offer was a challenge.

The display cabinet showcased everything from bread and butter pudding, banana loaf and carrot cake, to lemon drizzle loaf, vanilla school cake and apricot tea loaf. We eventually settled on the thick Biscoff brownies, which were a hit with everyone.

And let's not forget about the dogs - there's a menu for them too!

Our dog was quite pleased with his 90p sausage, plus a few scraps from our plates, of course.

Delamere Station House is a relaxed spot where you can stroll in wearing your muddy boots without worry, as everyone else is doing the same. It's the perfect place for a cosy café experience and some tasty food after a walk in the woods.
