For anyone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, Neighbours holds a special place in the heart. Whether watching the dinner time slot after school (after Blue Peter) or at lunchtime in your student days, many of us can recall the Neighbours cast of 30 years ago easier than we can recall the cast of the last thing we watched on Netflix.

The daytime soap ran from 1985 to 2025 after being created by TV executive Reg Watson, making it the longest-running drama series in Australian TV history. But it didn't get off to an easy start, being rejected by some networks (one of which described it as one of their "biggest missed opportunities". It was also cancelled in Sydney not long after it began airing.

It was first shown in the UK on BBC One in October 1986 and ran there for 22 years before moving to Channel 5 in 2008. It was dropped by Channel 5 in 2022 but picked up by Amazon before finally ending on December 11, 2025 after 40 years. The soap kick-started the careers of global superstars like Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce. But the fate of other cast members is far less well-known.
