Woman 'mocked' for dress at Chester races hits back with powerful message

A woman who was 'humiliated' by fellow attendees at Chester Races over the weekend has hit out at those who told her she looked 'stupid' with a powerful message about her dress

Chester Racecourse held its annual Powells Jewellery Ladies Day on Saturday (August 30). Hundreds of women turned up to the event dressed in full glam in the hopes of winning the Best Dressed Competition while watching the racing, and despite the rainy weather, most attendees had a fantastic time.

One woman, however, has taken to TikTok to share her experience at Chester Races through tears. She said she was "humiliated" by several racing fans who had told her she looked "stupid" in the dress she was wearing. The woman was seen crying during her emotional video as she explained that people had "pointed and laughed" at her on several different occasions throughout the day.

She said: "To all the people at Chester Races who have told me I look stupid, who have pointed and laughed at me. Not only who have pointed and laughed at me, but also to the girl and boy who came up to me and said I look stupid."

The woman had donned a beautiful pale blue wedding dress for the Ladies Day event, and while that might be an unconventional choice to most people, she had a heartfelt reason for doing so.

She said that people didn't stop to ask her why she was wearing a wedding dress so they could learn the true meaning behind her outfit, but instead went straight to mocking her and calling her "stupid".

The woman continued: "I'm wearing this wedding dress as someone who was trying to empower themselves after being dumped four months before the wedding. This was always going to be my hen do. So I decided for the hen do to wear my wedding dress, because I bought her to wear her.

"I didn't expect to get here and have people make a beeline for me to tell me I look stupid. For people to laugh and point at me, and then for me to be in a queue behind people [who were saying] 'Someone needs to tell her she looks ridiculous'.

"Why would you do that? Why wouldn't you just build somebody up? Even without knowing the story of why I'm wearing the dress, why would you even go to somebody to tell them they look stupid? Even if I wasn't dressed like this, anybody coming to me to tell me I look stupid would not be nice."

Commenters on the woman's video were quick to defend her, saying that the people who criticised her are likely "insecure" themselves. Others said if they had been at the races and seen her, they would have defended her.

One person wrote: "I wish I were there. I would defend you even if I had never met you before! You can wear whatever you want, wherever you want, just because they don't agree doesn't give them the right to be awful people."

Another added: "Darling, do not listen to a word they say. You look fabulous, and don't let them dull your sparkle. I hope you had the best day, regardless of the horrible people."

An employee at the racecourse even responded, saying: "I work at Chester Races. I saw you yesterday and you looked absolutely stunning!"

Some questioned why the friends she was with didn't defend her, but in a follow-up video, the woman shared a picture of her hen party and said they had done nothing but "build her up" the entire day.

She said the incident in the queue happened when she was alone, so her friends weren't there to advocate for her.
