Second World War hand grenade found in Crewe garden detonated by bomb disposal

Video shows officers carrying out a controlled explosion of the suspected explosive weapon

A suspected Second World War hand grenade was found in a Cheshire garden and later detonated.


At around 10.10am on Monday May 31, police received a report that the suspected explosive weapon had been found in a garden in Gresty Green Road in Shavington.


Officers and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were swiftly dispatched to the address.


A safety cordon was set up as a precaution and a controlled explosion was carried out by the EOD.

Resident Joanne Black took a video from her garden of the EOD team detonating the suspected hand grenade.

The video shows three officers setting up the controlled explosion, before standing back.

A huge bang is heard in the clip and dust and particles can be seen going into the air.

Resident Cathy Jones also took pictures of the bomb disposal van and police car in attendance.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: "At around 10.10am on Monday, May 31 police received a report of a suspected hand grenade from the Second World War having been found in a garden in Gresty Green Road in Shavington.

"Officers and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were swiftly dispatched to the address.
